HIGH SCHOOL

9th to 12th Grade

We encourage our students to explore and develop talents in academics, arts, athletics, leadership and community service. The academic courses offered at each grade level a unique opportunities for success. Our knowledgeable faculty brings the classroom alive and actively involves students in the learning experience.

The Elite Academy School of Excellence has a core curriculum of traditional learning in English, history, mathematics, science, and either Spanish Online. Core courses are enhanced and strengthened by Encore courses in art, technology, choral and instrumental music, drama, physical education, research skills and dance.

At The Elite Academy School we realize the unique needs of early adolescent boys and girls and we are sensitive to the overall development of the student. Our programs, including the  Boys to Men program That develop self-esteem and self-confidence by recognizing individual and group accomplishments. Understanding and adherence our code of conduct,  personal integrity and high expectations for appropriate conduct throughout the school.

The Elite Academy School of Excellence offers numerous opportunities for student participation and for our students to be leaders among their peers and within the school community. The  Student Council, and school sponsored organizations foster and encourage leadership and community service. Our inclusive sports and fine arts programs, which feature extensive opportunities for students in grades 7 and 8, offer both boys’ and girls’ teams, clubs, and individual involvement. A personal relationship with a faculty member, through our Advisor/Advisee program, fosters personal growth and understanding of who the student is and what he or she is capable of achieving.

Students in grades 6th, 7th and 8th take a core set of courses in their three years. These include three years of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Languages. In addition, each student is required to participate in at least one

competitive team sport per year. Students are also scheduled into a variety of courses in Art, Technology, Drama, Chorus, Band, Physical Education, and Research and Study Skills.

 

English

 

The English curriculum challenges students to develop their writing, grammar, and literature skills. Students gain a greater understanding of abstract ideas found in literature, develop the ability to write clearly and accurately, and strengthen literary,

reading, informational, vocabulary and writing skills. A humanities approach helps the adolescent learner have more relevance to his/her academics. In the 8th grade, an Honors component will be available for students who wish to challenge themselves. The Honors Component will have no bearing on the academic grade nor is it a perquisite for honors placement at the high school level. The purpose of the Honors Component is to offer the student a more vigorous preparatory experience and to experience the expectations of the high school English teacher.

 

Mathematics

 

Students progress through the math sequence according to their background and ability. Courses begin with 6th grade math and can conclude with Geometry , depending upon the progress of the student.

 

Social Studies

 

The 6th and 7th grades study World Cultures with an emphasis on World Geography and how each region developed economically, politically, and socially. 8th grade is a survey course of American History, with an emphasis on connecting the past to the present. Required readings in both grades supplement a student’s understanding of the world around them. Current events are an integral part

World Language Online

 

Students in 6th grade will take a semester each of Spanish and French in order to receive a strong foundation of both languages before choosing the course of option for 7th & 8th grade. Students will then take Spanish or French for their two year study in

grades 7th and 8th. Courses include speaking, listening, and writing skills. Culture units are an integral part of the study. The two year study results in advanced study in high school in the same language.

 

 

Physical Education and Athletics

 

Students in grades 6th, 7th and 8th are required to take Physical Education each year. Students are required to play one competitive sport each year, selecting from a large variety of team and individual sports offered. A no-cut policy is present in these grades, encouraging both boys and girls to try new activities. Physical Education is preformed on Thursday's and Friday's.

Important Notes and Considerations

 

Upper school students in grades 9-12 are expected to carry a minimum of six courses each semester,

of which at least five must be in core academic areas (English, History, Mathematics, Science, World

Languages). Students in 12th grade must take a minimum of five courses each semester. With the

assistance of parents, teachers, and advisor, students choose appropriate classes that conform to the

requirements of the core curriculum, as well as the student’s interests and long-term objectives.

FLORIDA BRIGHT FUTURES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Eligibility Requirements

The Elite Academy School of Excellence students are eligible to qualify for one of two Bright Futures Scholarships. Students

who may qualify should register online at www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org in early spring of

their senior year:

  • 4 English

  • 3 Mathematics

  • 3 Natural Science

  • 3 Social Science (including US History, Government, Economics)

  • 2 Foreign Language

  •  

May use up to 4 additional credits from courses in the academic areas listed above

and/or AP fine arts courses to raise GPA

World Literature (A1WL) 1 Credit

 

World Literature and Composition is a multicultural literary survey course designed specifically to

prepare all freshmen at The Elite Academy  School with the skills to move successfully across the curriculum

by stressing writing instruction and fluency in reading. To encourage a lifelong love for literature,

students study a host of genres, including novels, Shakespearean drama, memoirs, an epic poem,

short stories, poetry, and essays. Selections are theme based, and through these works students

consider important human issues, feelings, and ideas of other cultures. In addition, students

continue to reinforce grammar, composition, and vocabulary that are at the core of their

preparations for reading analytically, writing creatively, and articulating their interpretations both

verbally and in formal papers.

An Honors Enrichment Option is offered for students that are approved by the English

department. Students participating in this option are asked to complete additional assignments, as

well as alternative assessments for most units throughout the course. The emphasis of this work is

to further develop critical reading and abstract thinking skills, as well as advanced writing skills.

 

British Literature (A2BL) 1 Credit

 

This course is a chronological survey of western literature keenly focusing on British and European

works from 449 AD to the 20th century. We use this historical and cultural framework in order to

better understand western literature and its foundational role in our own literary tradition. To

sharpen the skills students have built at The Elite Academy School, we will read challenging and compelling

works of literature and write about them frequently. Many of the works we will be reading respond

to one another in creative and exciting ways and will allow us to have discussions about the literary

tradition we have inherited and the ways in which more contemporary authors have responded to it.

Students continue their introduction to the nomenclature of literary analysis begun in the freshman

year. Although students execute a host of important writing assignments, emphasis is placed on the

thesis-based, critical essay.

 

American Literature (A3AL) 1 Credit

 

American Literature introduces students to the great foundational writings of American Literature.

Students are challenged to trace the origins of American identity and culture through a wide ranging

survey of readings written from pre-colonial to the modern day. Dovetailing with their American

History course, this course works to build a fundamental understanding of the context and content

of American literature, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama. Students read a series of important

novels by authors such as Fitzgerald, O'Brien, and Kesey. In addition to a survey of American short

stories, students study and analyze American poetry, and read at least one major play. Juniors in this

course execute a series of important writing assignments with an emphasis on process and structure

in composition. Some preparation for standardized testing is built into the curriculum, and for

composing the college admission essay.

 

World Geography (B1WG) 1 Credit

 

In this course, students explore different countries, regions and cultures around the world, gaining a

stronger knowledge and appreciation of the rich diversity of our planet and its people. Students will

broaden their understanding of the physical and human characteristics of places and learn how

culture, geography and historical experiences have influenced people’s perceptions, the way they live,

how they act and react, and what they do to survive. In the regional studies portion of the course,

students will take a closer look at specific places, including political and physical features,

inhabitants, economies, and cultures. Students can also learn about cooperation and conflict among

people and how decisions and actions can have lasting effects. Through lectures, readings, writing,

projects, presentations and discussions, students can develop a more global perspective; becoming

informed citizens who can contribute to peace and stability in our increasingly complex world. An

Honors Enrichment Option is offered for students that are approved by the History department.

 

American Government (B4GOV) .5 Credit

 

The course in American Government is a semester-long class that will expose students to the basic

structure and function of government in the United States. Students will review the Constitution in

great detail and will study appropriate Supreme Court test cases that teach application of the

Constitutional principles. Topics such as political parties, voting and voting behavior, elections,

media influence on the political process, campaign finance, foreign policy, and civil rights and

liberties will be discussed in detail. An independent research project will culminate the students'

study of our nation's laws and functions.

 

US History (B3US) 1 Credit

 

Students in the Upper School United States History survey course will explore a chronological view

of our nation from its earliest beginnings to the modern day. Emphasis will be placed on an

understanding of the historical precedents that led this nation to its present form. Government,

society, and economics concepts will be focused on in each unit too. There will be a significant

writing component to this course as well as opportunities for public speaking. History is about the

people of a country so in-depth research projects will fill out this course of study.

 

World History (B2WH) 1 Credit

 

This course uses social, economic and political categories of analysis to examine the people and

institutions that helped to shape the modern world. Beginning in the 1300s with the Renaissance

and its spread through Europe, students will experience a journey through major turning points that

have had lasting impacts on today’s politics, governments, and people. These will include detailed

looks at Enlightenment, the Age of Revolutions, Imperialism, the World Wars, and the Cold War.

The structure and activities within this class are designed to push students to demonstrate “higher

order” thinking skills by comparing and evaluating historical perspectives through analysis of

primary documents, written assignments, and class seminars.

 

American Government (B4GOV) .5 Credit

 

The course in American Government is a semester-long class that will expose students to the basic

Introduction to Economics (B4ECO) .5 Credit

 

Students in grades 10-12 will have the opportunity to take a one semester course in Introductory

Economics. While the nature of the course is dominated by macroeconomic topics, some

microeconomic concepts will be covered in the course. Students will learn the basic concepts of

scarcity, opportunity cost, trade-offs, business organizations, supply and demand, prices, market

structures, and labor. Students will take part in The Stock Market Game as a hands-on experience

with investments. An end-of-semester research project will ask class members to research an

American corporation to learn some of the secrets of its success

 

Pre-Algebra (C08) 1 Credit

 

The pre-algebra course centers on building the foundations of the student’s algebra. They will be

introduced to variables, expressions, order of operations and basic problem solving skills. The

course also introduces students to absolute value, the coordinate plane and different algebraic

properties. The students will then build on this basic knowledge by learning how to solve multi-step

equations and inequalities and the complex algebraic functions that accompany them, such as

exponents. They will build on their existing knowledge of fractions by examining ratios, proportions

and probability, and converting to/from decimals. Additionally, students will be introduced to

percents and problems requiring the application of percents.

 

Algebra I (C1ALG1) 1 Credit

 

Algebra I is the first course in the Algebra I - Geometry - Algebra II sequence that will prepare

students for Pre-Calculus or FST. Students in Algebra I will learn about the properties of real

numbers and how to write, solve, and graph linear functions, equations, and inequalities. The course

also includes a study of exponents and exponential functions, quadratic equations and functions, and

polynomials and factoring. The course concludes with a unit on radicals and rational equations and functions.

 

 

Geometry (C2GEO) 1 Credit

 

This standard first course in geometry covers the required concepts of Euclidean geometry including

definitions, postulates, and theorems. Areas of study include angles, parallel lines, congruent and

similar triangles, rectilinear figures, polygons, circles and arc, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Special

topics covered include coordinate geometry, introductory trigonometry, and constructions. In
